A reflection on climate change October 15, 2009

Today is the annual blog action day and this years topic is climate change. I’ve decided to participate in this action because climate change has become such a major issue and I think this is a good reminder to pause for a moment and reflect on what it means to us. As with any major issue there are many aspects to it, many views and in this case a good deal of fear because the estimates regarding the potential outcomes continue to become more grim. So I’m inviting you to reflect on climate change and what it brings up for you, what it means to you and how it impacts your life and your vision of the future.
When I reflect on climate change a lot comes up for me. Initially what comes up is fear and sadness. The fear comes from imagining a future of severe challenge to humanity because of drastically changing climate. This seems to be somewhat inevitable based on the information currently out there yet it isn’t what I want to imagine for the future of the planet. I also experience sadness in seeing how we have treated this planet, our home. We ravaged Mother Earth and now she is reacting so in a way it could be considered karma, we are reaping the results of our actions in accord with the karmic law of the universe. A big challenge for me however is not getting stuck in the fear and sadness because that creates more suffering for me and doesn’t help the planet as a whole. So I’ve been practicing allowing myself to really feel and transform the fear and sadness and see that while I need to accept it I don’t need to remain stuck in it.
When I’m able to transform my fear and sadness I come to a peaceful place, a still place of clarity. From here I can approach climate change from a more spacious expansive perspective. I can let it motivate me to re-examine my lifestyle to see if I can make it more friendly to Mother Earth. I can also allow it to help me develop a deeper connection with Gaia and become more in tune with her so that I can live more in harmony with this planet that is my home. With this deeper connection I can ask Gaia directly what I can do to help her heal and listen with an intuitive sense for her guidance. Rather than fear and hopelessness what emerges is empowered action that arises out of acceptance and non-resistance. Transforming the fear also allows me to imagine a more positive future and by holding such a vision to help create that as a reality.
With climate change we often hear about what we humans are doing to the earth but we are not separate from the earth. We are the Earth, we were born from it and we will return to it, the Earth is us and we are her. From that point of view our actions can be viewed as a part of a natural process of growth of the planet itself, we represent the consciousness of the Earth or the planet’s awareness of itself. As our consciousness expands and deepens so does the planets. There is a great responsibility and a great gift in this. If we accept this responsibility we can not only transform ourselves and our society but the planet itself into a more conscious harmonious container of life force.
